In a significant development in the cryptocurrency world, Indian authorities have arrested the co-founder of a blacklisted Russian exchange, potentially impacting the broader industry.
Indian Authorities Arrest Garantex Co-Founder for Extradition
Indian police have arrested Aleksej Bešciokov, the co-founder of Garantex, a Russian cryptocurrency exchange blacklisted by the U.S. and EU, under the country’s extradition law. Bešciokov was on vacation with his family in Kerala when officials took him into custody. Garantex was banned by the U.S. in 2022 for allegedly helping criminal groups launder billions through its platform. Bešciokov may face up to 45 years in prison.
Binance Receives $2B Investment From Abu Dhabi’s MGX
Binance has secured a historic $2 billion investment from MGX, an Abu Dhabi-based AI and advanced technology investor. By acquiring a minority stake in Binance, MGX aims to support the convergence of AI, blockchain, and digital finance. Binance has already established a significant presence in the UAE, with 1,000 of its 5,000 global workforce in the region. Last year, Binance moved all of its UAE users to its Dubai VARA-regulated FZE exchange. The exchange received a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in April 2024.
